DANCE DESIGN "TREE WOMEN"
University of Montana, 2012
Choreographer's Note: "Tree Women is a ballet based on the Scandinavian myth of the Ellepiger or "alder tree girls." These tree spirits are beautiful on one side and hollow, dark, and evil on their other side. Like the Wilis of the ballet Giselle, they lure young men who wander into their forest to dance to their death. In my retelling of the myth, the tree women use their hollow backs to support the suffering of one who is new to their forest and their spirit world." - Michele Antonioli
PROCESS of building "Tree Women"
Dut to an extremely tight turn around the raw silk dresses were cut with an excess of caution. To maximize fullness in the skirt and still adequately fit the neckline, excess was marked around the midsection during the first fitting and then it was taken from the top after transferring all markings to leave the hemline undisturbed.
